College Education-Worth It Or Not?

Almost everyone says that a Bachelor degree is a must in order to survive in the society. They are probably right. You need to present your degree and certificates during job interview. Without a degree, you should never think about getting a high paying job.

Want to become a doctor? Please study medicine course at a college for at least five years. Make sure the University is prestigious and recognized by the government. If your dream is to become a doctor, please go ahead. Doctor is such a noble job and I always respect doctors. However, never become a doctor just because you want to earn a lot of money.

Studying at college can be very expensive. For instance, the degree program I am doing now at HELP University College costs me more than RM13,500 every year, excluding living expenses. First two years I will be studying in Malaysia. If I were to transfer to Australia in the final year, I would really have to pay a lot of money. Even that one year in Australia could cost a lot more than entire three year program in Malaysia. Let's say I really transfer to the University of Queensland in the third year, the entire cost of studying, including living and miscellaneous expenses for the three years would be about RM160-200K!

Money money money! Imagine what I could do with the RM160,000 cash if I did not study in the University.

1. Start a small business with RM160,000 cash capital.
I can become a boss immediately after secondary school! If I really manage the business well, I might be generating good income in the near future. So why go to work when you can become your own boss?

2. Find friends who share the same idea and start a partnership with them.
Let's say I find 10 friends who also agree with my opinion, we all can pool our RM160K each into a partnership. So it would be a total cash capital of RM1.6 Million. We can even float our company to become a public listed company.

3. Invest in stock or foreign exchange.
I am not proficient in this area. But I think RM160K is already a very good start-up fund for investment.

If money is not an objection, probably you will not bother what I mentioned above. So let's talk about time! The duration of a degree program is at least three years. Note, I have not counted the duration for foundation or pre-University program.

So what could I do in the three years if I chose not to study at University?

1. Find a job and work very hard.
I could find a job and work very hard. Within these three years, I would gain working experience as well as promotion. After the three years, my salary will most probably surpass what a fresh graduate can get. Of course there will be a salary limitation for you if you do not have a degree.

2. Start a business.
Business needs not only money, but also time. Otherwise, why would Bill Gates drop out from Harvard and focus on his Microsoft? There is of course risk involved in starting a business. No venture, no gain.

Want to become the second Bill Gates? No way, because Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook has already been recognized as the second Bill Gates. I always hope I can do what they did. Just drop out from college and start a high potential Internet business.

So is a college education worthy? It depends. There are so many factors to consider. If you do not have any financial problem, you should study and get a degree. However, do not just study blindly without knowing your goal in life. We should be clear with what we want to achieve in our life.

How Does Google Make So Much Money?

Google! Interesting topic isn't it? Some of my friends asked me, "how does Google make money when it offers free services to the public?" By the way, I assume you know what Google is. Google is providing so many powerful tools that I can't live without on the net. Things like Google search engine, Google Chrome, Google Translate, Google Reader, Google Analytics, Blogger, Youtube, Feedburner, etc are what I normally use everyday.

Back to the topic, how does Google make so much money since most of the services are free?
How does Google make money? What is driving the company's growth?

Today, the majority of our revenue comes from advertising.

Advertisers are increasingly turning to the Internet to market their products and services. Google AdWords, our auction-based advertising program, enables advertisers to deliver relevant ads targeted to search queries or web content to potential customers across Google sites and through the Google Network, which consists of content owners and websites. Our proprietary technology automatically matches ads to the content of the page on which they appear, and advertisers pay us either when a user clicks on one of its ads or based on the number of times their ads appear on the Google Network.

We distribute our advertisers' AdWords ads for display on the Google Network through our AdSense program. We share most of the revenue generated from ads shown on a site of a Google Network member with that member.

Want some examples, let's head to Google search engine. Simply type in something, says "Internet" in the Google search engine field. If you are too lazy, just click this link and it will lead you there.

Check it out. The left hand side of the search result page consists of free natural listings. Google will send its bots, called "Spiders" or "Crawlers" to crawl through the websites to search for good and natural contents. Then Google will use its algorithm and some processing methods to index the websites on the Google search engine result pages. The right hand side of the search result page consists of paid advertisements. The paid advertising program is called "Google Adwords". Therefore, the main and biggest income source of Google is from the Adwords advertising campaign. That's how Google can afford to provide so many free services and tools and yet earn big bucks. What Google needs is traffic.

In fact, you can find advertisements almost everywhere on the Google free service site. Go to your favourite Gmail and Youtube. You will find plenty of the advertisements.

Sometimes, you may find Google advertisements on some websites or blogs, including my old blog. It is actually a program called "Google Adsense" which allows webmasters or bloggers to publish the Google advertisements on their websites or blogs. In return, the publishers will get a certain amount of commission from Google. So Google acts like a middleman to find advertisers for your website and it is a win-win situation. I will write another post on Google Adsense in the near future. So stay tune!

What is RSS?

Got intimidated by this orange button? You may have seen it elsewhere and wonder what it is. So I am going to write a simple post to explain what RSS is and how you can use it as a powerful tool. Don't worry about the technical terms as I will keep it as simple as it can.

What is RSS
According to Wikipedia.org,
RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader", or "aggregator", which can be web-based, desktop-based, mobile device or any computerized Internet-connected device. A standardized XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's URI (often referred to informally as a "URL", although technically, those two terms are not exactly synonymous) into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds.

RSS formats are specified using XML, a generic specification for the creation of data formats. Although RSS formats have evolved since March 1999, the RSS icon ("the above orange button") first gained widespread use between 2005 and 2006.
What does the initial "RSS" stands for?
According to Wikipedia.org,
The initials "RSS" are used to refer to the following formats:

* Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91)
* RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)
* Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)

Confusion between Web feed and RSS
According to Wikipedia.org,
The term "RSS" (Really Simple Syndication) is still sometimes used to refer to web feeds in general, including web feeds with a format different from RSS. For example, the Blogspace description of using web feeds in an aggregator is headlined "RSS info" and "RSS readers" even though its first sentence makes clear the inclusion of the Atom format: "RSS and Atom files provide news updates from a website in a simple form for your computer. "
Wait, Sheng Loong, you are making me more confused with the facts and technical terms from Wikipedia!
Yes, I know. If you possess good comprehension skill, you should now understand what RSS is. However, many people like me cannot grasp all the above explanation in a short period. Therefore, I embed a little video here which explains what RSS is in plain English. (Sheng Loong, you should have shown this video earlier!) Yes, I know. Anyway, enjoy the following video.

There is another video which teaches you how to subscribe to RSS feed easily using Google Reader, one of the most popular web-based RSS reader.

I hope you have understood what RSS is by now. If so, please subscribe to my blog RSS feed by locating the cute RSS button on the right sidebar. I am using Feedburner as my RSS aggregator and management tool. You do not have to know what Feedburner is at the moment but I might write a post on Feedburner next time. Stay tune!

Facing the Giants

Make sure you watch this highly motivational video. It is actually a small part extracted from a movie called "Facing the Giants". As long as you believe in yourself, you will be making something big in your life.

Friends, I Need Your Blog Addresses

If you are reading this blog post, please check out my Blogroll on the right sidebar. I forgot to back up all the blog addresses that I had added on my old blog before migrating the blog. So I can only add some of the blog addresses which I can remember right now to the blogroll. If your blog name is not on my blogroll, kindly leave me a comment and disclose your blog address. You might want to add my blog address on your blogroll as well. If so, thank you very much!

I Have Finally Changed The Domain Name Server

Yesterday, I changed the domain name server of SuShengLoong.com back to my domain name registrar company, Namecheap. It was a easy thing to do but I had to wait for about 24 hours for the domain name server update. In order to host my domain name on the Blogger.com server, I also created a CNAME Record on my domain name registrar panel. You may not know what I am talking about. It's just some technical things that I did for transferring my domain name from my old web host to Blogger.com.

Just a minute ago, I found out that the domain name server has been fully updated. Since you are reading this post, welcome to my blog again! Yes, I have actually revamped my personal blog at least three times. To me, it is so interesting to play around with blog, domain name, server, coding, etc.

Happy Chinese New Year 2009!

Su Sheng Loong Dot Com Has Been Reborn!

As I said before, I wanted to move Su Sheng Loong Dot Com to my new server. I tried transferring all files and database to the US server but it took too much time and was lagging. So instead of keeping the same Wordpress blog, I actually decided to create an entire new blog with Blogger.com. There are pros and cons of using Blogger, and personally I would prefer Wordpress.org, to be honest. The problem is I hate the procedure of moving blog from one server to another. I think using Blogger hosted blog would save me lots of time and efforts. Of course another big advantage is that Blogger is FREE! So I do not need to pay for its storage and bandwidth. However, I do have to cede the flexibility and configuration of a Wordpress blog. After thinking for quite some time, I believe that hosting my blog on Blogger platform would have more advantages over my own web host and Wordpress. Anyway this blog is still under construction and I need some time to make sure everything is fine.

Su Sheng Loong Dot Com has been reborn on the first day of Chinese New Year 2009!
