Battle Of The Social Networking Sites
Posted by Su Sheng Loong on 14 May 2008 at 12:35 pm | Tagged as: Web 2.0
In this century, Internet is no longer a dull space where you are only allowed to search for information. With the existence of Web 2.0, people tend to communicate with others on the Internet via various platforms. For instance, Internet users network with other people on social networking sites. Besides, Internet surfers also communicate with others via instant messaging software, blog, forum, et cetera. Today, I am going to focus on social networking sites in this post.
There are many social networking sites on the Internet. You should be familiar with what Facebook, Friendster and Myspace are. These are the typical social networking sites which most Malaysians join. Other than these three sites, there are still plenty of them such as Hi5.com and Tagged.com.
I always receive email invitation from my friends to join various social networking sites. Sometimes I just get frustrated and reject to join. I mean how could I possibly handle so many social networking sites? Currently, I only have two social networking sites accounts, which are at Friendster.com and Facebook.com. I joined Friendster since year 2004 as many of my friends were joining it. In addition, I just joined Facebook recently as many Internet marketers and bloggers are using it.
There is always battle among all these social networking sites. Myspace has been the top social networking site in the world all these while. However, Facebook recently has faster growth than Myspace and is estimated to overtake Myspace soon. That is why Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook is so wealthy now. Friendster is on its declining stage in the international market. Nevertheless, Friendster has got more members than Myspace and Facebook in South East Asia, mostly in Malaysia.
I have actually asked for opinions from my friends regarding the differences among these social networking sites. They told me that Facebook has got many applications that let the users have fun. Myspace is nothing special compared to Facebook. On the other hand, Friendster is so popular in Malaysia because of its existing network and it is much simpler than Facebook. I guess people as lazy as me just don’t like the idea of spending time on decorating the profile page with fancy items and applications.
Which social networking site are you joining? Which one do you prefer the most? Please leave me your comment.

yea yea, friendster n myspace is similar, got friends list, comment list, groups list, blog lor…
but yea, most use friendster rather than myspace in Msia..
i hate facebook…
ahahaha… the reason is there is so many the duno wat wat applications here n there.. vampire battle la, then pets la, slap laa, superpoke la.. hahah… fun wall la… aiyoo… duno wat is wat.. hahaha…
i see liao oso faint.. the worse thing is sometime ppl added so many of such games/application that their pages is hard to load.. coz too many flash.. sienz!! hahahaha…
all in all… if u wana have a lot of applications/games added to ur profile, go for friendster… if u just wana have a list to keep friend contact.. friendster is ok kua… anyway, friendster nowadays oso got a lot of those applicatoin: speed typing la, imeem la, duno wat wat la… hahaha…
anyway, c ya..
Many people told me they hate Facebook, just like you. Sometimes I also get frustrated with all those fancy applications.
Besides, I also realize that Facebook takes longer time to load even if there is not much application on that page.
I choose Friendster. I joined Facebook too and it getting bored after a while. Why? Too many applications, invitation for applications and some other junks. I don’t have much time to spend on these craps tho. About MySpace, as you said nothing much different from Friendster. It was attacked by trojans before and that was why I left MySpace and focus on Friendster. Agree with what you said, its simpler compare to others.
Facebook has changed owner right? I can’t remember the figure but it was in billion. Worth it for those who spend their time for playing games but not me.
Again, I’d choose Friendster.
So is MySpace safe now? I have never joined MySpace so I do not know much about it.
I am not sure about the shareholders of Facebook. But what I know is that Mark Zuckerberg is still the CEO of Facebook and his net worth is at USD1.5 Billion. In fact, Microsoft also holds some shares of Facebook, not much though. So you can find Bill Gates on Facebook.
Hi,
How about ZenZuu? It is interesting as well. Why?
ZenZuu is a next generation social networking platform that lets you create a profile similar to other ancient social networks, except our leading edge technology allows you to make money by signing up your friends and receive revenue sharing.
Check the details here:

I have not joined it but I think the idea of making money from social networking sites is cool.
Hey, thanks for your early comment on my blog.
Unfortunately, I’m sick today…. Hopefully I will get recovered as soon as possible.
I agree to what you say as Facebook is quite complicating with its fancy tools. There are too many features! I’d say that those lazy bums like you and I would rather stick to Friendster. Ironically, Friendster is seemed to be dying soon.to the international extent. LOL!
You better rest well today. I have called uncle and the meeting will be held at 2.30pm tomorrow.
Well for me I would be same like you, I only have friendster and it barely updated, it just that if people wants update why don’t just add my hotmail and get the update instantly from me? troublesome to go every websites and update
In my opinion, decorating and enriching my friendster profile can give me a sense of achievement, especially when the profile really looks cool. But after doing and updating it for quite some time, I feel very tedious and lazy to update it. But I just love updating my blog. Perhaps I have got more interaction with my friends here.
yea , u go so much traffic flow here.. hehehe.. btw, u apply NUS & NTU ah? what course wor?
Actually I have not much traffic here. But as a new blog, I am quite happy with the traffic numbers. I have applied NTU for Business course.

You know so much about the secondary schools in Johor Bahru. If I am not mistaken, the last batch of SSI leavers are doing great in the latest SPM examination.
Ancient City of Johor State? I am not really sure about it. Could it be Muar? If you are not from Johor Bahru, how could you know so much about Johor Bahru and most of my friends in my secondary school?
Hmm.
Well, I barely use my friendster anymore and I don’t use myspace.
To me facebook seems to be the best even though got alot of weird invitations. I just ignore all though. XD
Oh, tell me when you get your acceptance letter ar! This sort of thing must tell! XD
Is it because most Singaporeans use Facebook?
Which acceptance letter are you referring to?
