One Day Vegetarian On Wesak Day
Posted by Su Sheng Loong on 19 May 2008 at 01:05 pm | Tagged as: My Life
My examination is around the corner and I am revising and doing all the past year examination exercises. I thought I would not be blogging for few days. But today is Wesak Day and I get bored studying the textbook. In the afternoon, I had vegetarian food as my lunch with my girlfriend and younger brother.
This was my lunch just now. Actually I am not a vegetarian and I do eat a lot of meats everyday. Since today is Wesak Day and I am a Buddhist, I decided to have vegetarian food for my lunch today, and maybe for dinner later at night. Besides, the restaurant is pretty new and the vegetarian food sold there is very cheap! What you see in the picture only costs me RM2 and free drinks are available there.
Some of my Christian friends and teachers have prejudice against vegetarian foods. They dislike meat-imitated food( I don’t really know how to call it in English) and some of them told me that it is pointless to eat those foods. Frankly speaking, I respect people who are vegetarians even if they eat meat-imitated food. After all, they are not eating real meats and no animals are being slaughtered for them. In my opinion, those Christians whom I know should respect Buddhists and vegetarians. Of course I am not trying to claim that all Christians are like that. I do have Christian friends who respect other religions and are very open-minded like Ezra.

Hahaha. I wondered why you linked to my blog. Anyway, yeah I have nothing against vegetarian foods although I can understand why your christian friends say that. After all, I still remember that time very long ago when your mom brought all of us to the temple to eat vege food. After the Yugioh tournament!
Although I can’t eat food offered to idols, thats a bit different. xD
Your blog is good and it deserves some link love. I almost forget what happened on that day and you still remember it!
If you are talking about food offered to idols, I do respect Christian’s custom and this is another case.
Hey Sheng Loong, you got the point there. We should always respect to other religions’ customs.
Yea respect others and others will respect us.
I’m not that great fan of vegetarian but still sometimes i can’t differentiate “meat-imitated” food with real meat >_< so sometime i just pick them and eat lolz
Zachary: You got the message which I would like to convey in this post.
EliteVillain: True. If you want to earn respect from others, you have to first respect them. It’s good to be not selective and fussy about food.
Lol. When talking about food-imitated, remind me about food at Vistana Hotel, Penang. I went for AssetFirst briefing and they provided us these foods. I thought it was salmon, lamb etc but ended up I was like “eh what is this?” and my chinese friend laughed at me “that is not real meat silly, some chinese don’t eat meat”. Ok fine with me
About respect, yes we as human being should give respect to all race and religion. This is basic rule of life.
P/s: I stuck in town last night in front of the temples lol.
Actually many people don’t enjoy eating those foods. In fact, it is better not to eat too much of these foods. Instead, vegetarians should consume more real vegetables rather than those meat-imitated food. But what I want to emphasize in this post is people should respect other people’s religions. I have got a teacher who is a faithful Christian. She once told me that there is no difference between eating meat and meat-imitated food since the desire of eating meat still exists. I agree the part where the desire is there. But I think that at least they are not eating real meats and no animals are being sacrificed for them.
hehehe.. i was vegetarian too yesterday…
hahah…cool…
but frankly, i dun like eating fake stuffs..
i dun mind eating vege… but seriously dun like those fake chicken, fake meat.. hehehe… coz sometimes the flour taste weird weird wan…
As I said in my last comment, I don’t encourage people to eat too much of so called “fake food”. But what I want to say is that people should respect people who are vegetarians even if they consume those “fake foods”. After all, no animals are being killed for them.
