Why I Host My Blog On Paid Domain And Server
Posted by Su Sheng Loong on 06 May 2008 at 03:12 pm | Tagged as: Blogging
Many of my friends are surprised when I tell them that I have got a personal blog hosted on my own domain name and web server. In fact, all of them are using the free blogging platform, such as blogger.com and wordpress.com. Well, of course I know that I need to pay few hundred Ringgits for purchasing a domain name and web host. But there are few reasons why I would like to host my blog on my own domain name and web server.
1. I Own The Blog
When I say I own the blog, I do really own it. People might respond to me, “I am also owning my free blog at blogger.com.” In fact, you are not owning that blog. Be more precise, Google OWNS your blog. You register for an account at blogger.com and use its server to host your blog. Do not forget blogger.com is OWNED by Google. Therefore, Google has the right to shut down your blog if you infringe their rules and regulation(whether deliberately or unintentionally). For the free wordpress.com, you cannot even display advertisement on the blog. Why? Because wordpress.com owns your blog, NOT you! By hosting my blog on my own domain and web host, I have absolute right to do anything to my blog, as long as it does not go against the Internet Law.

2. Wordpress.org Is The Best Blogging Software
Wordpress.org is by far the best blogging software and many well-known bloggers are using it. At blogger.com, you have less control over your blog due to its limited features and technical configuration. Please do not get confused between wordpress.org and wordpress.com. While both of them are free, wordpress.org requires you to host on your own server and domain. Besides, wordpress.org has many plugins that can enhance and upgrade the functions of your blog.
3. I Can Brand My Blog
Free blogs only give you subdomain name, for example sushengloong.blogspot.com or sushengloong.wordpress.com. Compared to just sushengloong.com, those two are far less professional. Besides, people tend to perceive that self-hosted blogs have higher status. Even when you look for more expensive advertisement, the advertisers will judge your blog by checking whether you have your own domain name.

In fact, there are many other reasons why it is better to have a self-hosted blog. However, if you are just blogging for fun or you hate technical stuff, then it might not be suitable for you. In that case, it is better for you to go for the free blogging platform. Anyway, blogger.com is so far the best free blogging tool that I have ever used.

If you read my latest post, my pictures are gone/disappeared. It really pissed me off but as you said, Google owns my blog. What I can do instead of whining is make a report to the blogger staff. Sadly those pictures have been deleted from my laptop. I look at the html format of the post, the pictures are still there, just they are not appear in the post. No idea why… As some peoples can view them, and some don’t.
I would like to have my own domain like you. But I have to make my own templates right? I don’t have much time since my working schedule pack like hell. Lol. I’m not finding excuse tho. But you know how we works in tax department…
Great post once again and I love your blog really. Lucky ROG have met me and you. Special thanks to ROG =)
I only hosted mine on Blogger, too lazy although ive got a friend who would do me my domain for just rm35 per year, =P
Teddy: In fact, I am also very interested in making money from blogging. I will definitely write a post on this topic.
pcbon: Actually the widgets on the sidebar do not cost me any money. What really makes me to pay money is the domain name and web host. Thank you for visiting my blog!
Faisal: Sometimes I got frustrated with the technical stuff as well. Well, you can still host your existing blog on your own domain name. In other words, you will not have to do anything to your existing blog template and setting. This is because you will still host your blog on blogger.com while pointing your blog to your own domain name.
Wannabe Economist: Although you host your blog on blogger.com, your blog has got pretty decent Google page rank and visitors. Thank you for coming here anyway!
Thank you everyone for supporting my blog. Although it is new, I will try my best to provide anything that I know on this blog.
